Overnight - Albergue Casa de la Abuela
With the forecast for an even milder day today, and stuffed after the breakfast buffet at the Estella hotel (and, of course, with Le Tour set to resume), I thought I'd test my fitness and try and push the pace up a reasonably difficult climb out of Estella this morning with a view to charging on through to my pre-booked albergue in Los Arcos.
The hill was a good challenge but so was the last dozen kilometres through flat and rolling farmland. It should have been a simple walk in perfect, overcast conditions, but for a good 30 minutes, I was semi-hobbling with a twinge in the inside of my right knee. I'm not sure what it was, but it just came out of nowhere and wouldn't dissipate. I can still feel the remnants of it now as I rest up in the Los Arcos albergue, but hopefully it will pass.
The post-shower afternoon was spent at a Los Arcos bar watching stage 10 of Le Tour (where the Australian Michael Matthews just happened to win in a pulsating breakaway).
In the evening, I wandered down to yet another extravagantly decorated church - the church of Santa Maria - and sat in on the mass that was about to start. The congregation of about 15 (average age 75+) was dwarfed by their surroundings, but seemed to apply themselves earnestly to their assigned chorus work.
Weather - Woke up to cloudy skies which endured throughout the walk. A slight breeze made it just about the perfect walking day.
Health - As reported, this right knee issue has me worried a bit, especially on the eve of a 30 kilometre stage tomorrow to Logrono. Otherwise, all good.
Food - Buffet breakfast at hotel (coffee x3, glass of orange juice, bread rolls with ham and cheese x2, cereal, yoghurt tubs x2, cheese slice, croissant with jam; package pastry slices); Packages of pastry slice x3; Small packet biscuit/crackers; Coke Zeros x2; Long bread stick; Block of milka chocolate
Expenses - Accommodation - 10.00; Food/Drink - 14.50 Total - 24.50
Walking time - 4 hours, 20 minutes (start 8:25am, arrive at accommodation 12:45pm)
Brierley distance - 21.5km (total 135.1km)
Daily Steps - 33,647
Total Camino steps - 231,808
